Merry Christmas from Cannondaler

Postby jschner » Wed Dec 24, 2003 9:10 am

I want to thank everyone for a great year and wish you all a Merry Christmas! I hope you get to have a great time with your families and ponder the true meanings of this season. A tradition in our house before we open presents is to read a few verses out of Luke 2 to help us remember WHY Christmas is important and to help set the mood.

Below is that section that we read:

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
ST LUKE

CHAPTER 2
Angelic ministrants herald the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem—He is circumcised, and Simeon and Anna prophesy of his mission—At twelve years he is about his Father’s business.

1 AND it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and apondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jim:
thanx for all you have done to keep things going, and your personal and family time that is fully involved in this site.

I am especially thankfull this year....as I am home with my family, and returned safely from Iraq. Something that is only so because of prayers and the Lords involvement. Wanted to share something with you all, as to why I am so lucky, and why honestly I am home. I shared this with Conan'dale when we visited earlier this year....so for me and my family, a very early Christmas.

I was getting ready to come home from our base camp outside of Tikrit Iraq (Saddam's hometown) and everything was set, I was to convoy south to an operational airfield outside the town of Balad. The night prior, my boss leaned over to me (very neat guy, we have a wonderful working relationship) and said, I understand you 'think' you are leaving tomorrow...we need to talk. Needless to say I was totally confused, as he was the one that signed all the required paperwork, approved everything, set the conditions I had to meet in order to leave etc...in other words, he was the one that was making it possible for me to leave, watched me pack, etc etc.

Well...in his tent, he basically told me he didnt know I was leaving, there was no way I was leaving...etc, didnt know how anything like me leaving happened, and honestly was very angry with me. I was crushed...you can not even imagine how my heart dropped out of my body. I had already told my wife, family, Dad (who is terminally ill etc) and now this....I was totally confused....thought my head was going to explode.....This wasnt like my boss at all......never saw him like this in two years...and the most recent in the high stress of a combat zone....like Mr Hyde was attacking me!

Well...needless to say I didnt leave that next morning, sent an email to my wife informing her I was staying....can not tell you the devastation I felt.
I spent that night praying for God to help comfort my family, and to keep them safe and be with them during this time, and honestly to help my feeble short sided brain to understand why it had happened...but I knew he had a reason. (this is compounded on the fact that I was only two days from formally starting my retirement earlier in the spring when we got the deployment notice for Operation Iraqi Freedom.....but my job is to serve and that is exactly what I did!)

Again, its like my boss turned into a completely different person.......totally unlike him and never saw him like that. His reasons he gave for me not leaving etc, made no sense at all....but he was the boss, and in the Army, you do what you are told!...so...I hunkered down for the long haul.
Its all good!

Mysteriously...in a couple of days...he was back to "normal" and he began setting up my departure out of country....needless to say I was scratching my head like a zoo monkey....

That is until I found out....that the morning that I was supposed to convoy down to the airfield and leave....insurgents had violently attacked a different convoy at the time and place that I would have been at that spot, just outside the airfield. They used automatic weapons and anti-tank rockets. They picked the wrong convoy to attack...as it was tanks and bradleys and things didnt turn out very well for the attackers at all.....you dont take a knife to a gun fight! What is interesting, the engineer unit I was in, was a wheeled unit and I would have convoyed down there in canvas covered HUMMVs. A good BB gun can penetrate the canvas...as there is no ballistic protection at all.

Had I gone down that morning as originally planned, I am certain I would not be here today, or the rest of the people in that convoy escorting me down and back. There is no question.
Why did my boss change like that?...and why did he switch back a few days later?...Why was I able to get a blackhawk ride to the airfield the next week (something that never happens?) That road is still ambush alley for any convoy!

I know why...our Lord has other plans for me on this earth still, and am blessed for his presence in my life.
I am living proof of the footprints in the sand....when the Lord walks with us day by day....if you look...there will be two sets of footprints in the sand....but at times...there will be only one....those footprints belong to Jesus when he carries us through some of lifes challenges...he watched over me that day.....cant even begin to tell you how it feels to have an experiance like this one!

Merry Christmas folks....I have the best I could ever hope for...one that was given to me directly from our Lord....and you know what....they just cant get any better!
:D :D :D

Merry Christmas all.......
God Bless!

Recognizing and appreciating are key. I still find myself wondering at someones 'luck'. When I catch myself, I scoff at myself. Luck indeed. Grace, my friend, Grace.
